Satan’s Party
Matt 26-28
The members were all present,
And the meeting room was packed.
Everyone was attentive
As they listened to the facts.
The mood inside the room was tense,
With what was taking place.
Expressions of worry clearly showed
On every member’s face.
They all sat around the table,
As they listened to the news.
And their leader who sat at the head,
Was clearly not amused.
Satan shook his head in disgust.
His mood was foul and grim.
For Jesus Christ was threatening
The kingdom built by him.
A lieutenant sitting on his left
Reported to him about
The many unfortunate demons
That were recently cast out.
He said, “This Jesus went to the tombs,
And caused us quite a riff,
When he sent some demons into pigs,
And the pigs fell off a cliff.”
“He’s cast out many of our brethren,
From the homes that they lived in.
He’s even given this power
To the men who follow him.”
Another lieutenant spoke up,
And he said to him, “My lord,
Unfortunately I must bring you
Another bad report.”
“The popularity of this man
Is spreading far and wide.
And many of our followers
Have gone over to his side.”
“Men who were firmly in our camp,
We’ve surrendered quite a few.
We lost a Roman centurion,
And some tax collectors too.”
As the bad new kept on coming,
Satan snorted and he swore.
And then he finally decided
He couldn’t take anymore.
He slammed his fist down on the table,
And jumped up to his feet.
He screamed, “I won’t give up this fight,
Or turn the other cheek!”
“This Jesus may have won some battles,
But he’ll surely lose the war.
And once he is defeated
I will reign forevermore!”
A lieutenant timidly spoke up,
“My lord, your words are true.
But our enemy is formidable.
What are we supposed to do?”
“We tried to trap him in his words,
But he passed our every test.
And he would not fall to temptation,
While out in the wilderness.”
Satan looked at his lieutenant,
And gave him this reply,
“The solution to our problem
Is for Jesus Christ to die.”
He let his words hang in the air
While he paced about the room.
And then he said, “This scoundrel’s death
Must happen very soon.”
“Go and tell our loyal subjects,
The Pharisees and the Scribes,
To have the man arrested,
And see that he is tried.”
“Arrange for him to be convicted,
And make sure he’s put to death.
Then we can claim our victory,
And put this matter to rest.”
The demons had their orders.
To their tasks they set about.
Satan would now wait anxiously,
While his will was carried out.
For days he sat impatiently,
With nothing much to do.
He tapped his fingers on the table,
While he waited for some news.
Finally a demon arrived,
And he had a lot to tell.
He flashed a smile and said, “My lord,
Everything is going well.”
“A disciple whose name is Judas,
Came looking for a reward.
Our men gave him pieces of silver,
And he told where they’d find his lord.”
“So Jesus was quickly arrested,
At a garden where he prayed.
And the rest of his disciples,
Got frightened and ran away.”
The Nazarene’s organization
Is collapsing as we planned.
Why, even the one they call Peter
Denied that he knew the man.”
The news that the Devil was hearing,
Was what he was waiting for.
The demon then cleared his throat and said,
“But there is a problem, my lord.”
Our people are not allowed by law
To kill this renegade Jew.
We need your wisdom and insight, sir.
What are we supposed to do?”
Satan took in the question
As he paused and rubbed his chin.
He said, “Turn him over to Pilate.
Let the Romans deal with him.”
“Go to the Roman governor,
And persuade him to decide
That Jesus is guilty of treason,
And must be crucified.”
The demon bowed before his leader.
“Yes, as you wish, my lord.”
And with his new set of instructions,
He hurried off to his chore.
Satan again was pacing the room,
While he waited for some news.
The demon returned with an update,
After a day or two.
He said, “My wise and discerning lord,
We followed your command.
I’m pleased to report that everything
Is going according to plan.”
“Jesus was brought to the governor,
And as the trial progressed,
Pilate wavered, but in the end,
He sentenced Jesus to death.”
“He first was taken out to be flogged.
Thirty nine times he was whipped.
I personally witnessed this,
And relished every bit.”
“The Jew’s now marching to Calvary ,
In pain, and struggling for breath.
He’ll soon be hung up on a cross,
And die a painful death.”
For Satan, this was becoming
A proud and glorious day.
The death of his hated enemy
Was only hours away.
He said, “Go to the cross and watch
His final moments pass.
Do not come back and report to me
Until he’s breathed his last.”
The demon quickly turned around,
And headed out the door,
Leaving his master behind to wait,
For the news that would come forth.
Time dragged on for the lord of hell,
As around the room he paced.
The minutes seemed like hours,
And the hours seemed like days.
Suddenly the door burst open,
And a horde of demons appeared.
They were giddy with excitement,
And grinning from ear to ear.
One of the demons in the group
Came forward and he said,
“My lord, I’m happy to report
That Jesus Christ is dead!”
Satan started shouting for joy,
And the demons all joined in.
They quickly flooded into the room,
And celebrated with him.
Many embraces they would exchange.
Many hands they would shake.
Then Satan called for silence and said,
“I have an announcement to make.”
“Let the rest of our brethren know
That they are all allowed,
To attend the party I’m throwing,
And the party’s starting now!”
Every demon found his way there,
And the room was all a buzz.
It was a party for the ages,
And what a party it was!
Tables were set up around the room,
Covered with food and drink.
Satan was given a hearty toast,
And he smiled and gave a wink.
One of the devil’s lieutenants
Shared tales of how Jesus died.
The demons found them hilarious,
And laughed so hard that they cried.
Vulgar songs were played aloud,
And everyone sang along.
And for the next three days and nights,
The party continued on.
During a lively conversation,
With some demons gathered around,
Satan stopped what he was saying,
When he thought he heard a sound.
The rest of the room took notice,
As they also heard the sound.
Every discussion came to a halt,
And the room quieted down.
The noise steadily grew and grew
To a loud reverberation.
The puzzled demons looked to their lord,
Hoping for an explanation.
As the sound reached deafening levels,
It was more than they could take.
Then suddenly the ground beneath them,
Violently started to shake.
Demons started screaming out
In hopeless fear, and then
An explosion of light filled the room,
And nearly blinded them.
When the demons opened their eyes,
They were stunned to see a man,
Standing in the midst of them,
With nail scars in his hands.
He went to each of the tables,
And overturned them all.
The food and the drink went flying,
And splattered against the wall.
The demons watched the demolition,
Which none of them could avoid.
And in mere moments the entire room,
Was totally destroyed.
All of those watching shuddered in fear,
Unable to comprehend,
While some collapsed onto the floor,
As if they were dead men.
Before them stood Jesus Christ,
Risen from the dead.
He looked at the cowering demons.
“Party’s over”, was all he said.
